Carryingyour car in and after rains
We have all been observing a phenomenon of some roads in UAE getting flooded for short periods of time due to heavy rains. Despite warnings / cautions from the authorities it is seen that many people drive their cars through such flooded roads.
Due to driving the car through water / flooded roads or due to water entering parked cars many issues can occur in the vehicle leading to complaints to the electrical systems and / or the Mechanical systems. The damage could be to the Air Filter, Brakes, Suspension, Electrical , Engine, Transmission, Drivetrain, as well as the Fuel and Power Steering Systems.
The Electrical systems in cars are also highly prone to damage due to water entry. Engine Control Computers, Sensors, Electronic components, and maybe even the Wiring Harnesses and the many Connectors that join them together could get affected due to water. The other components that are likely to be affected are Door Locks and its security systems, Motorised Window Regulators, Power Seat Motors, AC etc.
It is very important that these are all checked thoroughly and if required all affected parts thoroughly cleaned and dried. Else, the risk of damage / problems due rust / corrosion can come up weeks or even months after the flood or water entry.
In many cases, the damage due to flood or rain will not be visible initially. These items may work okay immediately following a flood, only to fail later due to the effects of water entry.
If you have driven your car through flooded roads or if the car was parked in an area where the water level had risen up, you need to get your vehicle checked for any potential damages immediately. Unless contaminants are completely removed from these important components, increased wear and premature failure can result.
